Company Origins

This business began in 1866 with Thomas Stockwell Simms creating it. Mr. Simms bought a small broom and brush enterprise with funds as a Veteran from the American Civil War by using his bonus and soldiers’ back pay. In 1872, this start-up company transferred to Saint John, New Brunswick. This port destination became well regarded for its shipbuilding participation and famous all over the world.

Thomas Simms underwent many tribulations but persisted with a variety of talents. Unfortunately, he tragically lost two wives and had an awful factory fire. He continued to strive onward despite these tragedies and forged his company ahead.



Simms preferred to travel and traveled to China in the 1900s. He became one of the initial brush manufacturers to make preparations to purchase his bristles directly. He was involved with the lay missionary movement. As a testament to his commitment and generous efforts, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church is found in India with a robust congregation.

Lewis Wesley Simms

After the founding father passed away in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took control of operating the Company. For the next fifty years, he worked as President. LW had a commanding presence and a vibrant personality. The company broadened from its regional roots to turn into a national business. Lewis designed automated brush-making equipment and promoted it, changing the industry forever. He was successful in attaining national prominence within the Canadian business market. He was specifically the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and also the Canadian Manufacturing Association.

LW Simms was inducted posthumously in to the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame and into the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association Industry’s Hall of Fame. Simms was really a visionary and a master of staff relations. His organized and effective approach allowed the company to flourish into the success it is today.



Thomas Stockwell Simms III, the great-grandson of the initiator, preserved the traditions of reliability and quality that the business was founded on. By developing a seasoned and creative workforce, stable management and colourful marketing, the plant capacity devoted to new product invention and innovation with investments in the latest equipment.
